about

During a radio programme about end-of-life care, a nurse used the expression "a good death". The interviewer pounced on it and asked "what does a good death entail?" The answer came quickly, "dignity, love, legacy." The very instant I heard those words, I knew I would have to compose a taiko piece (three taiko pieces), on this theme.

Courage is involved in the way that a taiko player stands, or sits. It’s involved in how they play the rhythms they play, because there are no passengers in taiko – every player and every beat are vitally important, as is the way in which those beats are played. To be a great player, it’s not just technical skills that are required, or good kata. A player needs courage in order to play with dignity, and to play with love as opposed to fear. Playing with courage leads to a great performance that will have a wonderful legacy – happy players, and a happy audience. Dignity, love, legacy.

People have asked "is the trumpet supposed to evoke the Last Post - the poignant trumpet call associated with military funerals?" If it does that for you, that's fine, but it's not necessary to de-code music. Just listen.
